My #169209 12 cup GE give an error message ERR5 - warming starts before brewing complete.

Instructions say to push start - and it does start brewing again - but I can't reset the warmer --- tried changing the settings before, after, and during brewing, even did a hard reset --- nothing helps. Any suggestions ?

Filter problems? Not any longer! I love my GE 12 cup maker and it certainly tastes better with a clean charcoal filter. Finding filters are also, certainly a pain in the lower section just below my back. I did quite a bit of research on charcoal, including activated versus regular charcoal and even reactivating my present charcoal. Here is my results to a "no-can-find-" filter. Go to your local pet store. Buy a small carton of Marineland activated charcoal. Now purchase a cheap pair of women's nylons; color does not matter. Cut a small square from the nylon, about 3 inches square. Pore a small amount of the charcoal into the nylon, about the same amount as in the original filter. Tie a simple knot in the nylon. Rinse your new filter well in COLD water until the water runs clear. Place this new filter in the filter holder (it does not have to close perfectly.) Go ahead, make your coffee now.
The box of charcoal will make around 40 filters.

the problem with the unit i find coffee grounds at the bottom of the pot and cups ?

Dad: That usually results from too much coffee in the basket or too fast of a water flow. You might want to try using the 1-4 cup setting for larger amounts if you have the extra time to wait. Also reusable filters let more water through and might stop the overflow of grounds.

Coffee Dad,

We're having a problem with our machine only brewing one cup at a time. Does this have something to do with the programming? Is there a way to reset to factory settings? We tried pushing the 1-4 button within 25 seconds to stop it from brewing on/off every 30 seconds, but it's still only brewing one cup at a time, so I'm thinking there's more going on. The manual doesn't give a lot on the programming side...Help?

PDM

Coffee Dad:I can't figure that one out. If anyone else can help out please chime in. Sorry guys.

I think this is the best coffee-maker I've ever owned. I love the auto-cleaning with reminder... but (there's always a "but", isn't there.) But 1) yes, I haven't been able to locate the replacement filters, either.

And 2) randomly and for no apparent reason, the unit will stop in mid-cycle. It just shuts off. I can turn it back on and it'll complete the brewing cycle. I have no friggin' idea what would cause this. The thing isn't even a year old. It doesn't appear to be a malfunction or an electrical problem. So, heck, I don't know.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks for the ebay link. I checked at a Walmart in Augusta, GA yesterday and they didn't have the filters. I will check at a Walmart in N. Augusta, SC (where I actually bought the coffee maker) and see if they have any. If not, I will order from ebay. Thanks again!

Coffee Dad. I an almost positive those are the same filters on ebay. If I had the time I would resale them on the site. There seems to be a need. Good luck.

This coffee maker works just great but I am at my wit's end trying to find someplace that sells the activated charcoal filters! Why would GE make a coffee maker and then "hide" the filters? Any ideas?

Coffee Dad: I have seen them in every Walmart I have been in. In the new Walmart layout for coffee makers the filters are on one of the two Tall walls bordering the low shelves that the coffee machines sit on. I hope that helps.
