GE 12 Cup Digital Coffee Maker Review Info And Help
|
The GE 12-Cup Digital Coffee Maker 169164 is a solid, inexpensive and loaded with basic features Coffee Maker. Too bad it’s only retailer is Walmart. |
The first batch of this Walmart sold GE 12-Cup Digital Coffee Maker had some quality issues that received many complaints before quality control was improved. Most of the GE coffee makers sold after November were the improved models with much fewer problems.
I have used the GE 12 Cup Digital Coffee Maker for around 30 cycles now with no failures or major problems. Al traces of a plastic taste went away after two cleanings with white vinegar mixed in the water.
You can manually adjust the temperature of the hot plate and I was able to keep the coffee sitting at a very hot temp with the plate set to the highest setting.
A full 12 cup pot of coffee takes from 12-15 minutes to brew with one of the activated charcoal filters inserted in the bottom of the water tank.
The reusable cone filter does leak through coffee grounds if you fine grind your coffee. The use of a disposable paper filter instead eliminates the problem.
My biggest complaint with the GE 12-Cup Digital Coffee Maker comes from its leaving water on the top of the water tank when you remove the coffee filter. If you don’t wipe it off it will drip down behind the coffee machine.

Update: Nearly 1 million General Electric coffee makers sold at Walmart are being recalled after dozens of reports of overheating, smoking, burning and fires.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission, which announced the recall Thursday, said Walmart has received 83 complaints about the GE-branded coffee maker, including three reports of minor burns to consumers’ bodies.
The reports of property damage include a significant kitchen fire and damage to countertops, cabinets and a wall, said the CPSC.
The recall involves about 900,000 GE 12-cup digital coffee makers sold exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide.
The coffee makers, with the GE logo printed on the base, were sold in white or black from March 2008 through January of this year. The model numbers involved are 169164 and 169165.
Consumers are advised to immediately stop using these coffee makers and return them to any Walmart for a full refund.

This coffee maker works just great but I am at my wit’s end trying to find someplace that sells the activated charcoal filters! Why would GE make a coffee maker and then “hide” the filters? Any ideas?
Coffee Dad: I have seen them in every Walmart I have been in. In the new Walmart layout for coffee makers the filters are on one of the two Tall walls bordering the low shelves that the coffee machines sit on. I hope that helps.
I’m not sure where you live but I’ve looked high and low in Wisconsin…nothing. In fact, this is the reply I received from Walmart…lol.

Well NONE of them I’ve been to carry them…can you tell me where I can
order one?
Susan
Thanks for the ebay link. I checked at a Walmart in Augusta, GA yesterday and they didn’t have the filters. I will check at a Walmart in N. Augusta, SC (where I actually bought the coffee maker) and see if they have any. If not, I will order from ebay. Thanks again!
Coffee Dad. I an almost positive those are the same filters on ebay. If I had the time I would resale them on the site. There seems to be a need. Good luck.
I think this is the best coffee-maker I’ve ever owned. I love the auto-cleaning with reminder… but (there’s always a “but”, isn’t there.) But 1) yes, I haven’t been able to locate the replacement filters, either.
And 2) randomly and for no apparent reason, the unit will stop in mid-cycle. It just shuts off. I can turn it back on and it’ll complete the brewing cycle. I have no friggin’ idea what would cause this. The thing isn’t even a year old. It doesn’t appear to be a malfunction or an electrical problem. So, heck, I don’t know.
Has this happened to anyone else?
Mine has always brewed just find until tonight when I tried to run the cleaning cycle. Now it won’t run and just sits there blinking. I even unplugged it and tried to reset but it’s still stuck on clean cycle. Help!!!
Coffee Dad,
We’re having a problem with our machine only brewing one cup at a time. Does this have something to do with the programming? Is there a way to reset to factory settings? We tried pushing the 1-4 button within 25 seconds to stop it from brewing on/off every 30 seconds, but it’s still only brewing one cup at a time, so I’m thinking there’s more going on. The manual doesn’t give a lot on the programming side…Help?

Coffee Dad:I can’t figure that one out. If anyone else can help out please chime in. Sorry guys.
the problem with the unit i find coffee grounds at the bottom of the pot and cups ?
Dad: That usually results from too much coffee in the basket or too fast of a water flow. You might want to try using the 1-4 cup setting for larger amounts if you have the extra time to wait. Also reusable filters let more water through and might stop the overflow of grounds.
